Why do colour scales run 50 to 950?
It is the convention Tailwind popularised. 500 is the base colour, lower numbers are lighter, higher are darker, and the gaps leave room to insert steps later without renumbering.
Should every colour in my system have a full scale?
Only the ones that need it. A primary, a neutral and one or two semantic colours (success, danger) usually cover everything. Generating eleven steps for a colour used once is wasted work.
