Terms of use

The site is free and you are welcome to it. These are the conditions that come with that, written to be read rather than skipped.

Last updated: 3 August 2026

By using colourpicker.tools (“the site”), operated by The Idea Works, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.

The site is free to use

You may use the tools and read the guides for personal or commercial purposes at no charge, with no account and no attribution required. The colours, palettes, gradients and exported code the tools produce are yours to use however you like — in client work, in products, in anything. We claim no rights over your output.

Accuracy, and its limits

We take the colour maths seriously. Conversions and contrast ratios are covered by automated tests and follow the published formulas rather than approximations. Even so, the site is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied.

This matters most for accessibility. The contrast checker implements the WCAG 2.1 contrast ratio calculation, and it is a useful and reliable indicator — but a passing ratio is not a certification of accessibility compliance. Real-world legibility also depends on font weight and size, rendering, ambient light, display calibration and the specific needs of your users. The colour-blindness simulator likewise approximates common forms of colour vision deficiency; it is a design aid, not a clinical or diagnostic tool. For work with a legal or regulatory accessibility requirement, test with real assistive technology and real users, and take qualified advice.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Idea Works is not liable for any loss or damage — including lost profit, lost revenue, or indirect or consequential loss — arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site, or from reliance on any result it produces. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, in which case those above apply only to the extent permitted. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including under consumer law.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to the site or its hosting infrastructure;
  • scrape or republish the site's written guides wholesale, or present them as your own;
  • use the site in a way that breaks any applicable law or interferes with anyone else's use of it.

Ordinary automated access — search engine crawling, accessibility tooling, a reasonable script — is fine and welcome.

Intellectual property

The site's written guides, design, layout, code and branding are the property of The Idea Works and are protected by copyright. You may link to any page freely and quote short extracts with attribution. You may not reproduce substantial portions of the written content without permission.

Colour values themselves are not owned by anyone. A hex code is a fact, and facts are not copyrightable — use them freely.

Advertising and third-party links

The site is supported by advertising served through Google AdSense and links to external sites in some guides. We do not control advertisers or third-party sites and are not responsible for their content, products or practices. A link or an ad is not an endorsement. See the privacy policy for how advertising cookies are handled and how to opt out.

Availability

We make no promise that the site will always be available. It may be taken down, changed, or have tools added or removed at any time without notice.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated. The current version always lives at this URL with its “last updated” date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
